Spotlight on Book Clubs
Everybody knows that the library is a great place to find a good book, but it’s also a great place to connect with other people who love books! The library offers several book clubs that provide opportunities to get out and socialize with like-minded people, make new friends, enjoy snacks, and talk about books.
The Book Lover’s Club is our longest running book club. The group began meeting in September of 2002, and has been meeting monthly ever since (minus a short pandemic break). This book club is a little different than most as the group doesn’t read just one book. Instead, members read whatever they choose, and share titles that they enjoyed (or didn’t!). Some of the books shared at the first meeting in 2002 included Cane River by Lalita Tademy, The Right Words at the Right Time by Marlow Thomas, Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind by Ann B. Ross, and Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. Some titles reviewed at the latest meeting included The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel, You are Here by David Nicholls, The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, and A Three Dog Life: A Memoir by Abigail Thomas. Book genres are varied, and readers of all types are welcome at this book club for adults that meets the Third Thursday of each month at 10 AM at the Main Library, with the next meeting on May 15, 2025.
The Hoopla Book Club meets at the Miller Branch Library the last Tuesday of each month at 2 PM. Book Club members choose titles in advance which are available as both eBooks and audiobooks on hoopla, the library’s popular streaming service (you can also read a print copy if you like.) Some past titles have included Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, An American Marriage by Tayari Jones, and Never Lie by Freida McFadden. This month’s title, Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, will be discussed at our meeting on Tuesday, May 27, at 2 PM at the Miller Branch Library.
The library’s newest book club, the BYOR (Bring Your Own Romance) Book Club, currently meets on the second Monday of the month from 1:30 – 2:30 PM at the Main Library. This club offers a place where everyone can celebrate love in literature. From Amish bonnet rippers to dystopian Harlequin romances, join us to see stories end happily ever after or with hearts torn and tears shed. Everyone reads their own selection of Romance and then comes together to share. Join us this month on Monday, May 12, at 1:30 PM for sharing of romance reads, conversation and light refreshments.
We hope you will join us at one of our book clubs, or maybe you would like to start your own? Drop by any FSPL location for books and inspiration for you and your group.
