Summer Reading

The Fort Smith Public Library’s annual summer reading programs for kids, teens, and adults are among the many ways the library works to create a community of readers and library users.  Through fun themes, prizes, drawings, and celebrations, the summer reading programs offer incentives for spending time reading or listening to books and other media.  The summer reading program begins June 1 and runs through July 31 each year.  Participants should sign up at the library location where they want to receive their prizes.

The summer reading program is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Arkansas State Library under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act.  Additional funding is provided by the Friends of the Library.

Children’s Summer Reading Program

The children’s summer reading program encourages reading for pleasure and is designed to minimize summer learning loss.  The summer reading program tries to keep kids actively engaged in reading while encouraging family involvement at the same time.  Preschool children too young to read independently can also participate.  Because the best way to raise a reader is to read to a child, they will receive credit for the books read to them.

Small rewards such as book bags, door hangers, food coupons, and the opportunity to have their name placed in a new book are given to each child for reaching specific goals.  Readers who read 25 or more hours during the program are eligible to win one of several grand prizes.

Teen Summer Reading Lottery

The Teen Summer Reading Lottery makes reading fun for teens.  For every item they read, watch, or listen to (books, CDs, DVDs, eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, digital titles, etc.), they receive a scratch-off ticket.  They rate the item on one side of the prize ticket, then turn it over and scratch off to reveal their prize.  Teens can win candy or a prize immediately!  Each scratch-off ticket also serves as their entry into weekly drawings for $10 gift cards and the grand prize drawing for a $50 gift card at the end of the summer.

Adult Summer Reading Celebration

Why should the kids have all the fun? Reading is for everyone, so the Fort Smith Public Library’s summer reading programs are for everyone, too.  Adults can turn in a review of any book, CD, DVD, eBook, audiobook, magazine, or digital title for a chance to win a $10 gift card in weekly prize drawings.  Entries are also eligible for the grand prize drawings at the end of the summer.
