Summer Reading

The Fort Smith Public Library’s annual summer reading program for kids, teens, and adults is fun for everyone!  The program is one of the many ways the library works to create a community of readers and library users.  Through fun themes, activities, and prizes, the summer reading program offer incentives for spending time reading or listening to books.  The summer reading program begins June 1 and runs through July 31.

To participate, register online at https://fortsmithlibrary.readsquared.com.  There, you can log your books (if you are a teen or adult) or minutes (if you are twelve or under).  You can also participate in missions, games, and write book reviews. For more information, watch this Tails & Tales video!

The summer reading program is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Arkansas State Library under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act.  Additional funding is provided by the Friends of the Library.

Our community partners that donated coupons for the library surprise bags are:  Burger King, Hardee’s, Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers, McDonalds, Papa Murphy’s Pizza, and Texas Roadhouse.

Children’s Summer Reading Program

Children's Summer Reading 2021: Tails and Tales

Children will earn one point for every minute spent reading or listening to books.  A LIBRARY PRIZE BAG filled with goodies will be awarded at 1000 points (1,000 minutes!).  Readers and listeners will also be entered to win an end-of-summer grand prize.  Register, track your reading progress, and earn badges online at  https://fortsmithlibrary.readsquared.com/.  You will also be able to download the READsquared app (available for iOS and Android devices).

New this year!  Page Turner Adventures!  Each week will include Show Day (interactive show), Craft Day (simple, fun crafts!), Author/Illustrator Day (short interviews with some amazing authors!), Mashup Day (recipes, games, bonus crafts, and other fun stuff), and Special Guest/Field Trip Day (a virtual visit to some amazing places and people!)  Kids of all ages will enjoy the professional content of Page Turner Adventures!

The Summer Reading Program encourages reading for pleasure and is designed to minimize summer learning loss.  The goal of the summer reading program is to keep kids actively engaged in reading while encouraging family involvement.  Preschool children too young to read independently can also participate.  Because the best way to raise a reader is to read to a child, they will receive credit for the time they spend listening to books.
