Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary
It’s not every year that the United States of America turns 250 years old! 250 years ago on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed, separating the thirteen colonies from their connection to Great Britain, creating a new independent nation. This historical milestone warrants special commemoration at the library, to honor and celebrate the nation’s past and its future. The Genealogy and Arkansas History Department is planning a line-up of events for every month of 2026. These will range from fun, interactive activities, to guest-speakers honoring the history of both the nation and Fort Smith. All events are free, and no library card or registration is required.
Here’s the department’s exciting line-up so far:
- January - Saturday, January 3, 2026 - 1:00 P.M.
Daughters of the American Revolution
The Fort Smith chapter for the Daughters of the American Revolution will share the history of their organization and the requirements to become a member.
- February - Saturday, February 7, 2026 – 1 PM
United States Marshals Museum: David Kennedy, Curator of Collections and Exhibits
David Kennedy the Curator of Collections and Exhibits from the United States Marshals Museum, will speak about Bass Reeves and other Black Deputy Marshals for Black History Month.
- March - Saturday, March 7, at 1:00 P.M.
Tom Wing: UAFS Director/Assistant Professor and Local Historian
Tom Wing, UAFS Director/Assistant Professor and local historian, will join us to talk about Fort Smith’s fascinating history.
- April - Saturday, April 11, at 1:00 P.M
Author Joyce Faulkner
Joyce Faulkner, a local author known for her historical fiction, will discuss her upcoming works, as well her previously released books Garrison Avenue and Julia and Maud.
- May - Saturday, May 2, at 1:00 P.M
National and Arkansas Historical Trivia
Who doesn’t love a friendly game of trivia? Join the Genealogy Department for National and Arkansas Historical Trivia with snacks and prizes! Teams will consist of 2-4 people, so bring your friends and family.
- July - Saturday, July 18, at 1:00 P.M.
Sons of the American Revolution
The Sons of the American Revolution Arkansas Society, General LaFayette Chapter – Fayetteville, Arkansas will join us to discuss the organization’s history in Arkansas and how to become a member.

Time Travel Tea: U. S. History
Venture back in time for a Time Travel Tea! Kids and their accompanying adult are cordially invited for an afternoon tea that’s a blast to the past. Guests are welcome to dress up, eat finger foods with tea/juice, and play games celebrating U.S. history.

Cody Faber: Park Ranger at the National Park Service
Perfect for fans of True Grit! Cody Faber, park ranger at the National Historic Site, will join us to talk about the fact and fiction of the classic True Grit novel by Charles Portis.

Family History Month Writing Class
While every month is family history month in the Genealogy Department, October is officially Family History Month! Learn how to research and write about your family history with the Genealogy staff.
