Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary

It’s not every year that the United States of America turns 250 years old!  250 years ago on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed, separating the thirteen colonies from their connection to Great Britain, creating a new independent nation. This historical milestone warrants special commemoration at the library, to honor and celebrate the nation’s past and its future. The Genealogy and Arkansas History Department is planning a line-up of events for every month of 2026. These programs will honor the history of both the nation and Fort Smith, and will include fun, interactive activities, and special guest speakers.  All events are free, and no library card or registration is required.

Tom Wing: UAFS Director/Assistant Professor and Local Historian

Stage Coaches, George Washington, US Deputy Marshals and More: Current Research Connecting Drennen-Scott to American History.  

  • April - Saturday, April 11, at 1:00 p.m.

Author Joyce Faulkner

Joyce Faulkner, a local author known for her historical fiction, will discuss her upcoming works, as well her previously released books Garrison Avenue and Julia and Maud

  • May - Saturday, May 2, at 1:00 p.m.

National and Arkansas Historical Trivia 

Who doesn’t love a friendly game of trivia? Join the Genealogy Department for National and Arkansas Historical Trivia with snacks and prizes! Teams will consist of 2-4 people, so bring your friends and family!

Library Director Jennifer Goodson: Fort Smith Public Library
 
Jennifer Goodson has been the director of the Fort Smith Public Library since 2004. Take in the history of the Fort Smith Public Library from its inception, as Jennifer shares her familiarity with the library's past.

Sons of the American Revolution 

The Sons of the American Revolution Arkansas Society, General LaFayette Chapter – Fayetteville, Arkansas will join us to discuss the organization’s history in Arkansas and how to become a member.

Time Travel Tea: U. S. History

Venture back in time for a Time Travel Tea!  Guests are welcome to dress up in period dress, eat finger foods with tea/juice, and play games celebrating U.S. history.  Children and adults are cordially invited to attend an afternoon tea that’s a blast to the past.   This event will require registration for a month in advance.  Those 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Cody Faber: Park Ranger at the National Park Service 

Perfect for fans of True Grit! Cody Faber, Park Ranger at the National Historic Site, will join us to talk about the fact and fiction of the classic novel, True Grit, written by Charles Portis. 

  • October - Saturday, October 3, at 1:00 p.m.

Family History Month Writing Class

While every month is family history month in the Genealogy Department, October is the official Family History Month! Learn how to research and write about your family history with the Genealogy staff.
