Fort Smith Residents
Fort Smith residents with proof of residency may apply for a library card to entitle them to borrow library materials. Applicants
for a library card must provide the following:
2. Current Address
3. Telephone number (or message phone number)
4. Identification in printed form, showing current address. Any of the following may be used as identification:
Handwritten receipts are not accepted as a real form of identification for our purposes. A post office box may not be used as the address of someone who lives in Fort Smith. Non-residents may use a P.O. box as their address.
Any patron under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Library cards are available for children age 5 and older. The signature of the parent or legal guardian is required.
At the time of registration, one book may be checked out. Patrons may not check out video tapes, DVDs, test preparation books that require a deposit or auto repair manuals.
A letter will be mailed to the applicant for verification of address. The letter must be brought in to the library, along with any material that has been checked out, in order to obtain a permanent card. If a family member already has a card, then other family members need not wait for a letter IF they live at the same address.
Non-Resident Card Holders
The Fort Smith Public Library is supported by the property taxes of the citizens of Fort Smith. Anyone living outside the city limits of Fort Smith is considered a non-resident and must pay an annual fee of $35.00 in order to receive a library card. This money is applied directly to our operational expenses and results in an improved collection for all of our patrons.
Non-Resident Property Owners
If a person lives out-of-town but owns property in Fort Smith, they may obtain a resident card if they show proof of ownership using one of the following:
Reciprocal Card Agreements with UA Fort Smith
Current UA Fort Smith student IDs may be used at the Fort Smith Public Library, as long as the ID indicates that the patron is a student at UAFS during the current semester. Fort Smith Public Library cards are honored at the Boreham Library on the UAFS campus.
NOTE: When you receive a replacement library card, the old barcode is deleted from your account and the lost card, should you find it, is no longer valid.

The Fort Smith Public Library has several database sources, such as OCLC FirstSearch, that list books not available at this library. For your convenience, we also have several magazine indexes, such as EBSCOHost, available to you from home as well as from any of our neighborhood locations. These indexes provide access to thousands of magazines, professional journals, newspapers, and other periodicals -- many more than we could possibly afford to have on our shelves.
When the requested book is returned to the library, the patron will be contacted. Books are held on reserve for 5 days after notification.
Library-sponsored programs and programs of the Library's affiliated organizations will be given priority in the reservation of meeting room space. Thereafter, requests are considered in the following order:
Businesses may use the meeting rooms for not-for-profit activities. Programs involving the sale, advertisement or promotion of commercial products or services are prohibited.
No person's right to attend a meeting or program will be denied or abridged because of origin, age, race, sex, background, views, sexual orientation or disability. No person's right to attend a meeting or program of a non-profit organization will be denied or abridged because of membership or lack of membership in that organization or group. Organizations may not charge an admission fee. Fees for items such as a meal or program materials are permissible as long as attendance is not dependent upon the payment of such fees.
Meetings or programs which, in the sole judgement of the Library Staff, would interfere with the functions of the Library or of patrons using the Library will not be permitted. Groups using the Library meeting rooms must observe the building's scheduled opening and closing times. Exceptions must be approved by the Library Director.
Scheduling of a meeting or program of a group or organization in the Library does not in any way constitute an endorsement by the Library of the group or organization, its activities, or of the ideas and opinions expressed during the course of the meetings or programs held at the Library. The use of the name, address or telephone number of the Fort Smith Public Library as the address or headquarters for any group or organization using the Library for meeting purposes is prohibited. Publicity generated by a group or organization for a meeting or event in a Library meeting room may recite the Library name, address and appropriate room designation only.
Any organization or group wishing to use a meeting room must complete the Application for Meeting Room Use and receive approval of the Library Director or his/her designee prior to requesting to schedule use of a meeting room. A new application form must be completed annually or the application on file be renewed if no information has changed.
For a copy of the Application for Meeting Room Use or to reserve a meeting room, please call 479-783-0229.
