FSPL Online Catalog | Tools to Help You Find a Good Book to Read | Internet Resources for Readers
We now provide Internet access to our online catalog, affectionately known as "Ollie."
- What Do I Read Next? Online Database
The library subscribes to What Do I Read Next, which can be accessed from any branch or from home, using your library card number. This resource is
an excellent starting point for people looking for something to read.
You can limit your search by age level, search for books on certain
topics, get lists of books similar to those you’ve already read, and
more. This easy-to-use tool is updated on a quarterly basis.
- What Do I Read Next? A Reader’s Guide to Current Genre Fiction (Print
version).
We have the 1994, 1995 and 1996 editions in our
collection. These books are general guides to genre fiction: mysteries,
romances, westerns, fantasy and science fiction, and horror fiction are
all covered. A brief description of each book includes a list of similar
titles you might want to try. 1,200 recommended titles are included in the 1996 edition, and earlier
editions have additional information on books with earlier publication
dates.
- What Do I Read Next? Multicultural Literature
More than1,350 titles are included in this resource, published in 1997.
Recommended books are divided into sections on African American, Latino,
Asian American and Native American literature. An essay by the editor of
each section gives a brief overview of the literature. Like the original
What Do I Read Next books, each book entry includes a list of similar
titles to try.
-
What Mystery Do I Read Next?: A Reader’s Guide to Recent Mystery Fiction
This book lists 1,800 recommended mystery and crime titles that were
published between 1989 and 1996. Lists of award-winning mystery fiction
are also included. As with the other books in this series, each entry
includes a brief description of the book, publication information, and a
list of similar titles you might enjoy.
-
What Romance Do I Read Next? A Reader’s Guide to Recent Romance Fiction
This is an excellent source for readers of romance, covering romances
published between 1989 and 1996. Lists of award-winning romance novels
are included, and a descriptive key, explaining the different story
types, allows readers to look up books by the type of romance they like
to read. Each entry contains a brief description of the book, along with
a list of up to 5 similar books that a reader might also enjoy.
-
Sequels: An Annotated Guide to Novels in Series, 3rd edition.
This annotated list of books in series is organized by the author’s name. If
the author has written more than one series, then the series are listed
separately. An introduction to the series, as well as a brief
description of each book in the series, is included in each entry.
- The Whole Story: 3000 Years of Sequels and Sequences
This source consists of a list of sequels and series, organized by the
series name (which is usually, though not always, the name of the main
character). The organization is a bit quirky to get used to, but the
title and author indexes provided at the back of the book allow you to
navigate pretty well. This is an extremely comprehensive source.
- The Fiction Catalog
This is an annotated list of books recommended by public
librarians around the country. The Fiction Catalog (located at the
Main Reference Desk) is updated on a regular basis. Its companion,
the Public Library Catalog (located in Technical Services, REF 011 PUB)
lists recommended nonfiction books.
