We are understandably proud of our newest library building, the one we call our Main Library, located at the intersection known as the Y by generations of Fort Smithians, where Rogers Avenue, Free Ferry, and Old Greenwood Road come together. Opened in February 2001, the Fort Smith Public Library was showcased on the cover of the architectural issue of Library Journal in December of that year. The new library building has many features requested by the people of Fort Smith and indicated through a needs assessment study conducted in 1995; among those features are more space for our collection of books, tapes, and videos; more public access computers; more areas for public meetings; expanded genealogy area and resources; a place for computer classes; more room for children's collection and activities as well as a separate space for young adults' books and computers; a larger publication reading area; a place for selling used books and another for snacks and refreshments. (Check out our Main Library Map to see all of these features and more.)

About our collection and resources:
The Main Library has an extensive collection of adult fiction and non-fiction books as well as books and music on tape and CD and many videos. Our Youth Services area has a terrific collection of children's books and young adult books, as well as many audio-visual materials that are age-appropriate. We have a separate area for Large Print books and for Spanish- and Vietnamese-language books. We also have several rooms for public meetings, several study rooms for students doing research in groups or alone. Throughout the building, we have several separate areas with public access computers (near the Reference Desk for adults, in the Genealogy Room for family history research, in separate areas for children and for young adults in Youth Services) and a computer lab for group computer instruction.

Genealogy Department:
Come upstairs at the Main Library to the find the origins of your family. Our Genealogy staff and volunteers will be happy to help you find your roots. Please note that the Genealogy departments hours are somewhat different from the rest of the library.

Story Times:
Every Tuesday at 10:00a.m. is Toddler Time; each Thursday at 10:00a.m., we have story time for Pre-schoolers and up. Our newest story time ventures include our Primetime Story Time and La Hormiga Cuenta Cuentos, a story time in Spanish; these are held once per month (most months). Parents are always welcome.
